AQUINO, ROXAS TO GIVE FULL ASSISTANCE TO FISHING INDUSTRY
Vice presidential race frontrunner and Liberal party candidate Senator Mar Roxas today said an Aquino-Roxas administration will give full assistance to small players in the fishing industry.
He said fisherfolk and small fish processors will need enough support—improved infrastructure, supply chain and marketing linkages—not only in order to survive the current challenges they are facing but also to maximize their potential in the local and international market.
“Kung tapat at tuwid ang pamumuno, tiyak ang asenso. Ang tapat at tuwid na pamumuno, nakatutok sa pagtulong sa maliliit na player sa merkado para sila ay lumaki rin (A clean and honest government ensures progress. It focuses on helping small market players grow),” he said.
Roxas said that with a clean and honest government, the experience of Tito Mike’s Food Co. Inc. in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte—a leading processed sardine exporter—can be replicated to more small fishers and fish processors small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).
“Dahil sa tapat at tuwid na pamumuno, lumago ang negosyo ni Tito Mike, at nag-e-export na siya ngayon sa Amerika (Because of clean and honest leadership, Tito Mike’s business has grown and is now exporting bottled sardines to America),” he said.
Tito Mike’s, owned by Mike Cases—a former overseas Filipino worker—received support from the Department of Trade and Industry’s SULONG program for SMEs under Roxas’ term as DTI Secretary. Tito Mike’s was recognized as Outstanding SME in 2003 and now supplies bottled sardines and other fish products to the US and Canada, and locally through Pan de Manila.
Roxas also relentlessly supported the sardines industry in Dipolog, and even supported the establishment of the In-Glass Sardines of Dipolog Association. Dipolog is known internationally for its bustling sardine processing industry that consists of 13 processing companies that source their fish from local fisherfolk and employs 290 employees.
“Daan-daang mangingisda ang nakikinabang, dahil merong mga food processor tulad ni Tito Mike na laging bumibili ng kanilang huli (Hundreds of fishermen benefit, because there are food processors like Tito Mike who regularly purchase from their catch),” he said.

THE PHILIPPINE’S TOP 40 ECONOMISTS HAIL SENATOR NOY AQUINO III AS THE “BEST HOPE FOR CHANGE AMIDST A FAILURE OF GOVERNANCE!!!
By Butch Fernandez, Business Mirror Reporter | 03/11/2010 8:47 AM
MANILA, Philippines – Top economists from various institutions, decrying what they call the “failure of governance,” threw their support behind the presidential bid of Sen. Benigno Aquino III in the belief that he represents their “best hope for change.”
“We believe the failure of governance is the main obstacle to the country’s long-run economic growth and ability to respond to the people’s most urgent needs,” a joint statement signed by over 40 Filipino economists said.
“It is time the Philippines once more had a leader who embodies the spirit of heroism and integrity we share as Filipinos. We are convinced that Sen. Noynoy Aquino is that leader,” it added.
Leading the signatories were Michael Alba, former dean, College of Economics and Business of De La Salle University; Fernando Aldaba, former chairman, Department of Economics of Ateneo de Manila University; and Filomeno Santa Ana III, national coordinator, Action for Economic Reforms.
According to the Economic Agenda Team of Aquino, among those who also signed up were former National Economic and Development Authority director general Cayetano Paderanga, Raul Fabella, Mryna Austria, Edita Tan, Vicente Paqueo, Teresa Jayme-Ho, Germelino Bautista, Maria Socorro Gochoco-Bautista, Gilberto Llanto, Erlinda Medalla, Gwedolyn Tecson, Ernesto Pernia, Leonardo Lanzona Jr., Fidelina Natividad Carlos, Carlos Bautista, Edsel Beja Jr., Emmanuel Esguerra, Ruperto Majuca, Melanie Milo, Jose Ramon Albert, Rhoelano Briones, Rafaelita Aldaba, Rosalina Tan, Danilo Venida, Allan Borreo, Alexander Narciso, Meldin Al. Roy, Jessica Cantos-Reyes, Joseph Francia, Emilio Neri Jr., Cristina Bautista, Philip Arnold Tuano, Romelia Neri, Reuel Hermoso, Joselito Sescon, Marilou Perez, Paolo Jose Mutuc and Sarah Grace See.
In batting for Aquino, the economists pointed out that, “Low growth, high poverty, big public deficits and deep public cynicism are the bitter fruits of failed governance and weakened institutions.”
“The call for a higher standard of public ethics, therefore, is not some abstract moral preference—it is an imperative for survival and development….We believe that among the presidential candidates, Senator Aquino represents the best hope for such a change,” they added
Also I would like to note the over-exploitation and illegal means of fishing employed in most of our fishing grounds. Take into consideration the inequality between big fishing operators and small, family-owned fisherfolks. Normally, like in any third world country, almost 50% of the fishing grounds are controlled by the few (about 40 families) yet obviously big players. The other 50% of the fishing grounds is shared by the other 2500 fisherfolks. This inequity translates to injustice and corruption, which must be addressed quickly if we are to alleviate the plight of so many poor fisherfolks.
Aquino-Roxas Administration should not only improved infrastructure, supply and market exposure just as the case of Tito Mike, but also be able to define and distinguish once and for all protected areas from fishing (which ones are coastal, for protection and for fisheries). they should be able to implement rules for all fisheries and fisherfolk organization and establish research which is very essential for the conservation, sustainable management and development of Philippines aquatic resources and habitats.
I can see the problem is the lack of coordination between govt. Departments like Department of Fisheries and DTI. Actually this is inter government task and project to help the industries to improve the economies of growers. You can see how incompetent our government department how big is the market for the export of Fishing Industry. Only Lapu-Lapu is the most expensive fish for export and Phils. can be found a lot of fish. Well there are things we can do for fishing export industries to expand it but government department is very slow and incompetent. Department of Fisheries are the regulator but what they do NOTHING sitting DOCK.
KUDOS TO SENATORS NOY & MAR FOR PROVIDING THE FILIPINO PEOPLE WITH A POLICY STATEMENT BENEFITTING THE FISHING INDUSTRY. WHILST THERE SEEMS TO BE NO POLICY STATEMENTS EMANATING FROM THE OTHER PRESIDENTIABLES WHICH MAKES THE VOTER GROPE IN THE DARK ABOUT THE LACK OF COMMITMENT, CAPABILITY OF “MONEY VILLAR” & THE OTHER PRESIDENTIABLES ABOUT WHAT THEY INTEND TO DO WITH THE VARIOUS SECTORS OF THE PHILIPPINE ECONOMY !!!
No comitment no word, no honor!….
you will not this coming election!….
can you please tighten the screws in your brain? and bugger off
Sir Noynoy and Sir Mar,
