MEXICO, PAMPANGA -- Marciliano “Bong” Dizon, a coordinator for the Noynoy Aquino for President Movement (NAPM), was fatally shot Wednesday night at a wake in Pampanga, in what many believe is the first election-related violence within the ranks of Sen Noynoy Aquino’s supporters. Paying his respects at Dizon’s wake, Aquino vowed he will not allow the case to remain unresolved. Sen Mar Roxas, who was also at the wake with Aquino and LP candidate Ed Panlilio, said that the party is ready to help Dizon’s family. NAPM’s chief officer in Pampanga said that Dizon had received multiple death threats since he started volunteering for the organization, and seemed to know his life was in danger on the day he was shot.

A senate investigation into the C-5 road controversy found presidential aspirant Sen Manny Villar guilty of improper and unethical conduct for using his political sway for his companies’ financial gains. The report also states that Villar is being asked to return to the public coffers the P6.22 billion that “he or his companies illegally gained or obtained” as a result of unlawful acts. »Philippine Daily Inquirer
UPDATE: Senate OK's Villar censure. 12 senators, including Sens Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas, have signed and will tackle the issue on the Senate floor. Former senate president and LP senatorial candidate Franklin Drilon dared other presidential candidates to make their stand on the Chief Justice appointment issue known, saying that only Sen Noynoy Aquino has taken a firm stand while the others choose to “consistently play on the safe side.” Aquino had said: "I will not merely stand by and watch our countrymen lose faith in the integrity and independence of the judiciary because of this administration’s plan to wield power beyond allowable limits." »Malaya
Aquino’s statement drew both praise and criticism. Palace allies were quick to assail Aquino as “arrogant and irresponsible.” But those who share Aquino’s view said that an acting Chief Justice should suffice. Former Environment Secretary Fulgencio Factoran said Aquino’s remarks were necessary: “I think Noynoy is correct in 'warning' those who are willing to be part of this ploy that they can not do this with impunity. There will be a price to pay for this novel and strange interpretation of the law." There is a constitutional ban on midnight appointments by the president. »ABS-CBN News GMA, lagot ka sa tatay mo. Arroyo’s father, former president Diosdado Macapagal, opposed midnight appointments, Aquino reminded the Palace. Diosdado Macapagal cancelled 350 midnight appointments made by his predecessor, Carlos P. Garcia, with the Supreme Court backing Macapagal’s moves. Article VII, Section 15 of the 1987 constitution also categorically bans midnight appointments.
»Abante
CALOOCAN CITY -- Sens Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas said that they will make house-building for the poor through Gawad-Kalinga part of their platform of governance. Aquino said he was amazed by the transformation of GK communities, and wants to build similar communities in slum areas around the country. “This is what I want to replicate all over the country, not just build homes but to change and correct what is wrong in our country,” he said. »Philippine Star
SAN FERNANDO, LA UNION -- While he said that he would not stop other candidates from attacking him, presidential frontrunner Sen Noynoy Aquino said it’s high time to focus on actual issues, to focus on campaigning and the lapses of the Arroyo administration. Aquino said that the best measurement of a leader is to think of the greater good, not what will keep one in power. He slammed the current presidency for rampant corruption, improper use of governments, and a poor response to education problem, among others. He and some Liberal Party senatorial bets visited schools in La Union and attended a forum with local businessmen. »Philippine Star

In twin articles, Rina Jimenez-David of the Inquirer and Joanne Ramirez of the Philippine Star, share what they found out about the enigma that is Noynoy Aquino. Who is he, what’s he about?
Ramirez seems amused by Noynoy’s “inscrutable smile,” and Jimenez-David enamored of how he met his Lani. Both comment on his and Mar Roxas’s relationship, his vision for his administration and the country, and his affable demeanor. Asked how he would describe his government in one word, he asked for two: “It works.” If you ask me how I’d describe their encounter with Noy, I can give one: “Nakakakilig.” »Ramirez's "Noynoy Opens Up" »Jimenez-David's "When Noy met Lani"
Following Noynoy’s “Hindi ako magnanakaw” TVC, there is much talk about and comparing the virtues of the leading contenders for the presidency – truth be told, it is Aquino vs Villar in 2010, writes Ed Banayo in Malaya. What should be the benchmark in comparing the two?
Banayo argues it all boils down to one thing: Trust. Whom are we to trust? “On one who swears upon the graves of parents we trust that ‘hindi ako magnanakaw’? Or one who tells us of his vision of a polity and a society where ‘hindi na kailangan pang magnakaw,’ as if to say that there is some justification for all the stealing and all the cheating and all the accompanying lying, that has bedeviled this nation and its people?”. »read more
An all out verbal battle between Aquino on one side and Villar on the other revolved around one thing: Experience. The Inquirer’s Conrado de Quiros points out that this argument has been used twice before: Marcos to Cory and GMA to FPJ. The first was history, as we well know, the second was absolute farce in that GMA ended up cheating the votes off Poe anyway.
De Quiros adds to this formula now that Villar is using the argument against Noynoy: history repeats itself, the third time as suicide. It will boomerang on Villar, he argues, because Noynoy has no experience in graft, corruption, abuse of power. He has no experience in C5-type dealings. Noynoy has made his stand against GMA known, while Manny remains a “loyal oppositionist,” having not done anything to quell rumors he is truly GMA’s candidate, the “sleeper,” the Manchurian candidate. Charge that to experience, writes de Quiros. »read more Related: Is Villar’s PR a resurrection of John McCain’s experience line?
Writing to the Inquirer, Cassandra Acedersa shares her opinion on those slamming Noynoy and Mar for personality politics on account of their parents:
“I cannot recall any instance or occasion when either one of them harped on their parents’ virtues or legacy before and during this electoral campaign. They have remained humble and silent about their parents’ achievements. It is only ill-meaning and biased people who, seeing the edge these two candidates have over their rivals or possibly their own candidates, inflict their warped thoughts on the rest of us.” »read more
Bernadette Palma Reyes shares her message to Noynoy, and it seems she voices what many Filipinos feel: "With Cory's death, our hope went pfft, but you Noynoy, are here to march with us again to save our beloved Philippines." Ms Reyes is silent-campaigning: four votes in the family times four times four, she says, will lead to a thousand and one votes for change. »read more
